Foxtail Millet Kichdi or Thinai Arisi Kichdi in Tamil is a special but often made dish in Tamil Nadu. The kichdi featured in this article uses Daivik’s certified-organic foxtail millet or Thinai arisi is used as a main ingredient, along with dal, leafy greens, and mixed vegetables.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup of Daivik’s organic foxtail millet
- 1 cup of carrots, peas, beans, capsicum
- 1 large onion
- 1 tomato
- 1 tsp of grated ginger
- ¼ cup green leaves
- ½ cup dal
- 2.5 cups of water
- 1.5 tbsp of ghee
- ½ tsp of jeera
- ¼ tsp of red chili powder
- 1 pinch of turmeric
- Salt as needed
Method
Step 1: Wash foxtail millet and dal thoroughly until the water becomes clear and soak for about 30 mins to 1 hr.
Step 2: Heat a pressure cooker or pot and add ghee. Add cumin to allow them to splutter, and finally add ginger and sauté the mixture for few seconds.
Step 3: Add onion to the mixture and sauté it till becomes golden brown. Also add other veggies such as tomato, carrot, beans, peas, and capsicum. Sauté on the medium flame for 2 to 3 minutes.
Step 4: Add red chili powder, turmeric, garam masala, and salt and sauté till tomato gets mushy.
Step 5: Add drained millets and dal. Sauté the mixture for 2 to 3 mins.
Step 6: Add water and salt – as needed.
Step 7: Pressure cook for 2 to 3 whistles on a medium flame.
Step 8: Add a tea spoon of ghee and stir it up.
Step 9: Serve the healthy organic foxtail millet kichdi with papad, pickle or vegetable curry.
